Job description:
A call is open for one research grant to develop research activities within the Project NEXT-SEA – Next Generation Monitoring of Coastal Systems in a Scenario of Global Change, NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000032, financed by CCDRN/Norte2020 (FEDER), in the following conditions:
Research Field:
Civil Engineering
Requirements for admission:
Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Systems Engineering, Maritime Engineering or in other related fields. The candidate should be fluent in written and spoken English. Preference is given to candidates who have experience in using advanced numerical tools for structural modelling, as well as on developing 3D models and meshes with complex geometries for mechanical/structural analysis. Experience in topics related to Maritime Engineering or ecological systems management are also valued.
Work plan:
The research to be carried out will be focused on developing and characterizing advanced materials for underwater marine structures considering biological colonization, as well as to derive service-life models. These materials will combine cementitious matrix composites and polymer matrix composites. The design procedures will be devised considering multiple functionalities. The main type of structures to be studied may be classified as multifunctional artificial reefs, and their design must consider the synergistic effect resulting from combining different functions in the same maritime structure, such as: coastal defence, energy production, wave regularization for water sports, scientific and tourism support, among others. Special emphasis will be placed on the development of advanced functionalities such as the bio-receptiveness, self-healing, self-sensing and the incorporation of biomimetic concepts.
Applicable legislation and regulations:
Law Nº. 40/2004, of 18 August (status of the scientific researcher fellow); Regulation of the research grants of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt).
Work place:
The research work will be developed at the School of Engineering, University of Minho (ISISE – Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering), under the scientific supervision of Professors Eduardo Pereira and Isabel Valente.
Duration of the Grant:
The grant will have the duration of 12 months, beginning in January 2017. The grant may be renewed for 24 months more.
Monthly allowance:
The monthly allowance is €980, according to the rules of the Portuguese Science Foundation(http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt).
Selection criteria:
The selection methods will be the following:
- 30% considering the CV, including the final grade of the BSc and the MSc, articles or books already published, previous experience in experimental and fundamental scientific research;
- 30% for the adequacy of the CV to the work plan proposed;
- 40% for the interview and motivation of the candidate (only the best candidates selected from applying the two previous criteria will be interviewed).
Jury:
Eduardo Nuno Borges Pereira, Assistant Professor at UM (President)
Tiago Filipe da Silva Miranda, Assistant Professor at UM (Effective Vowel)
Maria Isabel Brito Valente, Assistant Professor at UM (Effective Vowel)
Vítor Manuel do Couto Fernandes da Cunha, Assistant Researcher at UM (Substitute)
Publicitation/notification of results:
the final results will be sent by email to the candidates.
Application period and structure of the application: The call is open between 19/12/2016 and 16/01/2017.
Applications should include an application and motivation letter together with the following documents: Curriculum Vitae, certificates of graduation degrees and other documents considered relevant.
Applications must be delivered personally during the period from 9h to 17h at the address indicated below, or sent by post to Prof. Eduardo Pereira, Departamento de Engenharia Civil da Escola de Engenharia da Universidade do Minho, 4800-058, Guimarães, Portugal. The documents can also be send by email to: [email protected]
